The communal bank "Santa Catalina de Sillacancha” has been in operation for 9 cycles (each cycle is 4 months). The communal bank is made up of 10 women and 3 men. The communal bank meetings are held every thirty days in the community of Sillacancha's communal room (Calca, Cusco, Perú). The majority of the members live in the community ofSillacancha. (The community of Sillacancha is located 10 minutes from the city of Calca and 50 minutes from the city of Cusco). Sillacancha is known for its beautiful landscapes and mountains and for its temperate climate. The majority of those who live in the community of Sillacancha make their livings in agriculture and ranching.
The members are hard working and enterprising people. They see every moment as an opportunity to get ahead, and with their daily effort, to give their children a better future. The economic activities through which some of the members make their livings are: selling vegetables, selling corn or selling dry goods, and others offer various services.
Teolifa is a memeber who was born in Huánuco Department. She is 48 years old. Currently, Teolifa lives with her husband and their three children in the community of Sillacancha. Teolifa's main business is selling vegetables and fruits. She brings her products to different markets in the cities of Cusco, Calca and Urubamba to sell. She brings her produce twice a week. She also earns a living raising small animals, like guinea pigs, chickens and pigs. At this time Teolifa needs the loan, just like her friends from the communal bank, to increase her business's capital. But she also wants to purchase corn. (The members who do not appear in the photo requested permission to miss the meeting).
